Anti-aging

As we age, our skin becomes thinner, less elastic, develops wrinkles, loses its moisture holding capacity, is more easily injured, slower to heal and loses its fatty content. There are many internal and external factors that contribute to the aging process. One of those internal factors is our genetics, however our everyday habits can make a big difference in the way that we age.

Our Dermatologists understand the many ways to slow the aging process gracefully. The most important of those is sun protection. Whether spending a day at the beach or running errands, sun protection is essential. You can protect your skin by seeking shade or covering up with sun-protective clothing. Examples may include lightweight and long-sleeved shirts, pants, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses with UV protection.

Using sunscreen that is broad-spectrum, SPF 50+, and water-resistant is also beneficial for preventing sun damage that may accelerate aging. For the best anti-aging effects, sunscreen should be applied every day to all skin that is not covered by clothing.

Our Dermatologists can also give you significant insight into cosmetic products with active ingredients that can boost hydration, elastin and collagen production. These are otherwise known as cosmeceuticals.

A cosmetic product can only be applied to the outer surface of the skin, and cannot pass through the dermal-epidermal joining, which is the area between the outer and middle layers of the skin. In contrast, the active ingredients in cosmeceuticals can penetrate through this area and act deep within the skin.

Many products on the market have anti-aging properties, but it’s often hard to decipher what actually works.

Our dermatologists can talk to you about:

  1. Preventative anti-aging strategies

  2. Ingredients that should be in your anti-aging products

  3. Oral supplementation for anti-aging

  4. Non surgical options (injectables and lasers) for anti-aging

  5. Surgical options for anti-aging
