Rhinophyma
Is Rhinophyma Affecting Your Appearance and Quality of life?
If you’re experiencing thickened, bumpy or uneven skin on your nose, advanced treatments can help treat this condition. Achieve the best outcomes with highly specialised care.
What Is Rhinophyma?
Rhinophyma is a severe form of rosacea characterised by the thickening and enlargement of the skin on the nose. This condition primarily affects middle-aged to older adults, affecting women and men. Over time, the nose becomes bulbous, bumpy, red, and uneven due to the excessive growth of sebaceous (oil) glands and connective tissue.
Rhinophyma can be distressing both cosmetically and physically, as it may lead to nasal obstruction or difficulty breathing. The exact cause is unknown, but it is believed to be related to advanced rosacea.
Non-surgical treatments are available and can be highly effective in all stages of severity. At Hunter Coast Dermatology & Laser, we offer CO₂ laser resurfacing and other laser-based therapies that can smooth thickened skin, reduce redness, and restore a more natural nasal contour. Medical treatments such as topical or oral therapies may also help control sebaceous (oil) gland function and slow progression. Early intervention can lead to significantly better outcomes.

Treatment Options
CO2 Laser Therapy:
CO2 laser therapy is one of the most effective treatments for rhinophyma. This laser targets and removes excess tissue, reshaping the nose and improving its appearance. The CO2 laser precisely ablates the thickened skin layer by layer, which allows for the reduction of the bulbous appearance and the smoothing of the nose’s surface. This treatment can be performed under local anesthesia and typically results in a significant cosmetic improvement.
Combination with Medical Management
In addition to laser therapy, medical management may be necessary to address the underlying rosacea that contributes to rhinophyma. This can include topical or oral medications to reduce inflammation, control oil production, and manage other rosacea symptoms. Combining medical treatment with CO2 laser therapy can help maintain results and prevent the progression of the condition.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can rhinophyma be prevented?
While rhinophyma itself may not be entirely preventable, managing rosacea effectively can reduce the risk of developing this severe form. Early intervention with medical treatments can help control symptoms and minimise the progression to rhinophyma.
