Looking to Reduce the Appearance of a Birthmark?

From port-wine stains to café-au-lait spots, our specialised treatments are designed to reduce the appearance of birthmarks safely and effectively.

What Are Birthmarks?

Birthmarks are areas of discoloured or raised skin that are present at birth or develop shortly afterwards. They can vary widely in size, shape, and colour and may appear anywhere on the body. Some common types of birthmarks include vascular birthmarks, such as port-wine stains and hemangiomas, and pigmented birthmarks, such as café-au-lait macules, naevus spilus, and naevus of Ota.

  • Port-Wine Stains: These vascular birthmarks appear as pink, red, or purple patches on the skin, often growing darker and thicker over time. They are caused by an abnormal development of blood vessels and are most commonly found on the face and neck.
  • Hemangiomas: Hemangiomas are benign vascular tumors that typically appear as raised, red areas on the skin. They often develop within the first few weeks of life and may grow rapidly before gradually shrinking over time. While most hemangiomas do not require treatment, some may need intervention if they interfere with vital functions or cause cosmetic concerns.
  • Café-au-Lait Macules: These pigmented birthmarks are flat, light brown spots on the skin. They can vary in size and are usually harmless. However, having multiple café-au-lait macules may be associated with genetic conditions like neurofibromatosis, so it’s important to have them evaluated if they are numerous or large.
  • Naevus Spilus: Also known as speckled lentiginous nevus, this pigmented birthmark consists of a café-au-lait macule with darker spots or speckles within it.
  • Naevus of Ota: This pigmented birthmark appears as a bluish or grayish discolouration, usually on the face, around the eyes, or on the forehead. It is more common in individuals of Asian or African descent and can increase in pigmentation over time.
At HCDL, we treat birthmarks in patients who are 12 years old or older.

Birthmarks are generally harmless, but some can cause cosmetic concerns or, in rare cases, be associated with other health issues. Understanding the type of birthmark and available treatment options can help manage these skin conditions effectively.

Asset 21@4x

Q-Switched Laser Therapy

Q-switched lasers are particularly effective in treating pigmented birthmarks like naevus of Ota, café-au-lait macules, and naevus spilus. These lasers emit short pulses of energy that target the pigment within the birthmark, breaking it down so it can be naturally removed by the body. This treatment helps to lighten the appearance of the birthmark over multiple sessions.

Vascular Laser Therapy

For vascular birthmarks such as port-wine stains and hemangiomas, vascular lasers are the most effective treatment. These lasers target the blood vessels within the birthmark, causing them to shrink and fade over time. Early treatment often leads to better results, especially in younger patients.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most birthmarks are benign and pose no health risk. However, certain types, like large hemangiomas or numerous café-au-lait macules, may be associated with other health issues. It’s important to have birthmarks evaluated by a your Dermatologist to determine if further monitoring or treatment is necessary.
While many birthmarks can be effectively treated with laser therapy, the success of the treatment depends on the type of birthmark, its location, and its response to the laser. Some birthmarks may lighten significantly with treatment, while others may be more resistant and require ongoing management.
The number of sessions required varies depending on the type and size of the birthmark, as well as the individual’s response to the treatment. Typically, multiple sessions are needed, spaced several weeks apart, to achieve the best results. Your Dermatologist and Laser Nurse will outline a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.
